A full height, glazed, curtain walling system, supported from the buildings' steel frame, forms the rain screen cladding to the offices. A\skin of traditional material wraps around the building standing 300mm proud of the curtain wall, designed as a bolt on system. The design allowed the inner face of the overcladding to be completed earlier in the project. This in turn enabled the fit-out to start earlier, thus speeding up the construction programme. It also removed the difficult to manufacture traditional masonry façade from the critical path. Our involvement in the project was the fabrication of the terracotta spandrels and tubes. All the terracotta was deliberately manufactured oversized. Individual elements were then sawn to size and fabricated using coloured epoxy resin to form the component parts. All manner of different connection details had to be manufactured, each one with a tolerance of +/- 2mm. Spandrel elements were drilled and rebated to accept resin fixed studs and pins, which were used to bolt to stainless steel backing plates. The reverse of each unit was visible from within the building and consequently all faces of the assemblies had to receive very careful attention to detail. Links to other pages |
